Putin-Trump meeting unlikely during Riyadh peace talks

Bloomberg has reported that a potential meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump could take place in Riyadh early next week, following U.S.-Russian negotiations in Saudi Arabia. However, Yuri Ushakov, a Russian representative, has expressed skepticism about the likelihood of such a meeting occurring.

The discussions in Riyadh mark the first round of talks between the U.S. and Russia aimed at exploring the possibility of a ceasefire in Ukraine. These preliminary talks were intended to assess Moscow's intentions, with U.S. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce cautioning against expectations of a breakthrough agreement.

The prospect of a meeting between the U.S. and Russian presidents has emerged as one of the initial challenges in these negotiations. While Bloomberg highlighted the potential for such a high-level encounter, Ushakov downplayed the possibility, suggesting it remains unlikely. Despite this uncertainty, the idea of a Putin-Trump meeting continues to hold significance within the broader context of international efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine.

The talks in Riyadh are part of a wider diplomatic push to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Although the meeting did not yield any immediate breakthroughs, it represents a critical step toward fostering dialogue between Washington and Moscow.

The U.S. is particularly focused on determining whether Russia is genuinely committed to ending the war. Ukraine, while not directly involved in these talks, remains a central focus of the negotiations. President Volodymyr Zelensky has made it clear that Kyiv will not recognize any agreements reached without the participation of Ukrainian representatives.

During the discussions in Riyadh, which included U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, both sides agreed to form teams dedicated to ending the war in Ukraine. They also pledged to collaborate on economic and geopolitical issues. Notably, the European Union was absent from these talks but is expected to be included in future negotiations.

Although the Riyadh meeting did not result in any groundbreaking agreements, it may serve as a pivotal moment in advancing dialogue between the U.S. and Russia. The U.S. remains cautious, seeking to verify Russia's sincerity in pursuing peace. Meanwhile, Ukraine's exclusion from the talks has raised concerns, with Zelensky reiterating that any agreements made without Kyiv's involvement will not be recognized. As diplomatic efforts continue, the potential for a Putin-Trump meeting, though uncertain, underscores the complexity and high stakes of the ongoing negotiations.
