Alleged aftermath of the drone attack on Saratov Oblast, Russia, overnight on Feb. 11, 2025.
Ukrainian forces targeted Russia's Saratov oil refinery in an overnight strike on February 11, according to a statement from the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces. This follows reports of drone attacks in the region. The refinery, located approximately 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) from Ukraine's border, primarily produces gasoline, fuel oil, diesel fuel, and over 20 other types of oil products. The facility is a critical supplier of fuel to Russian occupation forces in Ukraine, the General Staff noted.
The attack was reportedly conducted through a coordinated effort involving Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces, military intelligence agency (HUR), Special Operations Forces, and other units. The Ukrainian military confirmed a successful hit on the refinery, resulting in a fire. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation, emphasized the strategic importance of the Saratov Oil Refinery, describing it as one of the key components of Russia's fuel infrastructure. With an annual refining capacity of 7 million tons of oil, the facility plays a vital role in supplying fuel to the Russian military, making it a high-value target for Ukrainian forces.
Saratov Oblast Governor Roman Busargin acknowledged that an industrial facility in the region had been struck by drones but stopped short of confirming whether it was the oil refinery. The attack aligns with Ukraine's broader strategy of intensifying long-range drone strikes against Russian targets, particularly oil facilities that are crucial for sustaining Moscow's military operations and war economy.
This strike is part of Ukraine's ongoing efforts to disrupt Russian supply lines and weaken its military capabilities by targeting critical infrastructure deep within Russian territory. As the conflict continues, such operations highlight Ukraine's growing reliance on advanced drone technology and coordinated military intelligence to strike strategic assets far from the front lines.
