Ukrainian forces destroy Russian thermobaric munitions depot in Donetsk Oblast, General Staff reports
The Ukrainian army destroyed a thermobaric munitions depot on the Russian-occupied territory of Donetsk Oblast overnight on Feb. 28, 2025
On the night of February 28, Ukrainian forces successfully targeted and destroyed a thermobaric munitions depot located in Russian-occupied territory within Donetsk Oblast, according to a statement released by the General Staff of Ukraine on Telegram. The post included a video capturing the strike near the town of Selydove in the heavily contested Pokrovsk district.
The footage shows an initial explosion followed by a dramatic chain of much larger secondary blasts, likely caused by the detonation of stored materials on the ground. The General Staff identified the target as a "thermobaric ammunition storage facility used by the Russian invaders." While the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, the strike represents a significant blow to Russian military operations in the region. The Kyiv Independent noted that it could not independently verify the claims made by the Ukrainian military.
In addition to the thermobaric munitions depot, Ukrainian forces reportedly struck three other Russian facilities. Among these was the Ilsky oil refinery in Russia's Krasnodar Krai, marking the second time in February that the refinery has been targeted. A previous attack on February 17, carried out by Ukrainian forces, resulted in a fire at the facility.
According to a source who spoke to The Kyiv Independent, the refinery comprises six oil refining units with a combined annual capacity of 6.6 million tons. The repeated targeting of Russian oil infrastructure underscores Ukraine's strategy of disrupting Moscow's war efforts by cutting off a critical source of funding. Fossil fuel revenues are a key pillar of Russia's economy and directly support its military operations.
Ukraine has increasingly focused on striking Russian oil facilities, viewing them as legitimate military targets. By targeting refineries and storage sites, Ukrainian forces aim to weaken Russia's ability to sustain its war effort, both by reducing its fuel supply and by undermining its economic stability. The attacks on the Ilsky refinery and other facilities demonstrate Ukraine's growing capability to conduct long-range strikes deep into Russian-held territory, despite the challenges posed by Russia's superior firepower and resources.
The destruction of the thermobaric munitions depot in Donetsk Oblast is particularly significant, as thermobaric weapons, also known as "vacuum bombs," are among the most devastating conventional weapons in modern warfare. Their ability to cause widespread destruction and casualties makes them a high-priority target for Ukrainian forces. The strike near Selydove not only eliminates a critical stockpile of Russian munitions but also serves as a morale boost for Ukrainian troops and civilians amid the ongoing conflict.
As the war continues, Ukraine's ability to conduct precision strikes on strategic Russian targets highlights its resilience and adaptability. These operations not only disrupt Russian supply lines and logistics but also demonstrate Ukraine's determination to defend its sovereignty and resist occupation. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, as the conflict shows no signs of abating and the stakes for both sides remain extraordinarily high.
