On March 1, Russian forces targeted a Ukrainian military training ground in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast during a formation exercise, as reported by Mykhailo Drapatyi, Commander of Ukraine’s Ground Forces, on March 3. The attack, which has raised significant concerns about military safety protocols, occurred amid ongoing tensions between the two nations.

A day prior to Drapatyi’s statement, social media platforms began circulating reports of a Russian strike using an Iskander-M ballistic missile on a training facility in the village of Cherkaske, located near the regional center of Dnipro.

According to these reports, the strike was executed after an Orlan reconnaissance drone identified a formation of Ukrainian soldiers approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the front line. The precision of the attack has sparked questions about the effectiveness of Ukraine’s defensive measures and the potential for intelligence leaks.

Drapatyi refrained from disclosing the exact number of casualties among Ukrainian soldiers, citing the sensitivity of the situation. He acknowledged that the full details of the incident might be obscured by bureaucratic processes but vowed to ensure transparency and accountability. “A tragedy at a training ground is a devastating consequence of an enemy strike. This war demands swift decision-making, heightened responsibility, and updated safety standards. Failure to adapt will result in greater losses,” he emphasized.

In response to the attack, Drapatyi announced the launch of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the strike. He also appointed an independent review panel, which includes military counterintelligence officials, to examine the incident thoroughly. “All individuals involved in the decision-making process that day, as well as those who failed to act in a timely manner, will be held accountable. There will be no room for excuses or formalities,” he stated firmly.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed responsibility for the strike on March 1, asserting that it had targeted the Novomoskovsk military training ground in Dnipro Oblast using an Iskander-M missile. According to Russian reports, soldiers from the 157th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were conducting military exercises at the site at the time of the attack.

This incident is not an isolated occurrence. Russian forces have previously targeted Ukrainian troops during formation exercises in rear areas. For instance, on November 3, 2023, a Russian missile strike in a village near the front line in Zaporizhzhia Oblast resulted in the deaths of 19 soldiers from the 128th Brigade and two civilians.

An investigation by Ukraine’s Defense Ministry revealed that the soldiers had been gathered in a courtyard for an awards ceremony, with no adherence to camouflage or safety protocols, making them an easy target.

The repeated attacks on Ukrainian military formations highlight the vulnerabilities in current defense strategies and underscore the urgent need for improved safety measures and operational secrecy. As the conflict continues, such incidents serve as grim reminders of the high stakes and the importance of adapting to the evolving tactics of warfare.
