It's time to be blunt: America’s leadership has switched sides in the war. The American people have not—and they must speak up.
In recent weeks, U.S. leadership has openly demonstrated hostility toward Ukraine, aligning its rhetoric and policies with Russia. That hostility reached a peak today when President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a tense Oval Office meeting.
After the heated exchange, Zelensky left the White House—reportedly after Trump ordered the Ukrainian delegation out.
Let that sink in. The president of war-torn Ukraine, a U.S. ally, became the first world leader in history to be expelled from the White House. Not a dictator, not a disgraced politician—but the leader of a nation fighting for survival against a brutal invasion. The same country America once vowed to help bring peace to.
In the meeting, Trump and Vance chastised Zelensky for supposedly not being “grateful enough” for U.S. assistance. Zelensky, in turn, reminded them that he had repeatedly expressed gratitude to the American people, including earlier that day. But Trump and Vance were looking for more than gratitude—they wanted submission. They wanted him to grovel. They wanted him to kiss the ring.
Yes, Zelensky could have kept his composure better. But he was placed in an impossible situation. If he allowed Trump and Vance—who, notably, needed two men to verbally attack one non-native English speaker—to continue their assault unchecked, he would be seen as weak both at home and abroad. And weakness is something a country at war cannot afford to project.
Trump’s treatment of Zelensky stands in stark contrast to his demeanor with other world leaders who have publicly contradicted him. When French President Emmanuel Macron and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer challenged his false claims about Europe, Trump simply shrugged and smiled.
Will he take the same confrontational approach with Vladimir Putin? We already know the answer. If there’s any ring-kissing in Trump’s upcoming meeting with Putin, it will be the Russian president’s hand receiving the honor.
During the Oval Office exchange, Trump even complained that Zelensky harbors “hatred” for Putin—the man who ordered the invasion of his country, killing thousands of civilians. Trump lamented that it would be “tough” for Zelensky to “make a deal with that kind of hate.”
Let’s be clear: Only one force in this war has the power to end it instantly—Russia. Putin could order his troops to withdraw at any moment. But he won’t, because he doesn’t want peace—he wants Ukraine.
Zelensky and Ukraine want a fair peace—one that ensures their security and honors the immense sacrifices they have made in resisting Russia’s aggression.
What happened in the Oval Office today was unprecedented but not unexpected. For weeks, Trump has displayed open hostility toward Zelensky and Ukraine while embracing Russia. Some have tried to downplay his actions as strategic maneuvering or a misinterpreted stance. But the reality is much simpler.
Today, Trump declared that he supports both Ukraine and Russia. Then, he expelled Ukraine’s delegation from the White House. There is only one conclusion: Donald Trump is for Russia.
The president of the United States has sided with an authoritarian regime against a democratic ally—simply because that ally dared to stand up for its independence. Trump is aligning himself with a murderous tyrant instead of a democratically elected leader.
His administration is ensuring Ukraine’s defeat while undermining other U.S. allies. More importantly, he is betraying American interests and making the nation weaker.
The tragedy is that Trump is doing all of this in the name of millions of Americans who do not support his stance and are outraged by his actions.
The Kyiv Independent has been inundated with messages from Americans expressing support for Ukraine, embarrassment over their leadership, and disgust with Trump’s betrayal.
But the United States remains a democracy—whether its leaders value it or not. And in a democracy, the people’s voices matter.
If you reject the notion that empowering tyrants leads to peace and stability, you have the power to act. Call and email your representatives. Demand unwavering support for Ukraine. Attend pro-Ukraine rallies. Write, post, speak, advocate. Donate to Ukrainian causes. Make your opposition known.
Americans must send their leaders a clear message: We do not support this betrayal, and we will not allow it to be done in our name. We reject an alliance with Russia, and we refuse to abandon Ukraine. Frankly, we are ashamed.
Speak now—before it’s too late.
Trump may have chosen his side of history. The American people are still free to choose theirs.
I agree trumpy is NOT MY PRESIDENT HIM AND ALL HIS CABINET SHOULD BE THROWN OUT of every office they are in and should be charge with treason!
