Trump's presidency divides America: Mixed approval ratings reveal gender gap

A recent CNN-commissioned poll has shed light on public sentiment during the initial phase of Donald Trump's presidency, raising questions about the level of support he currently enjoys from the American public. Trump officially assumed the role of U.S. President on January 20, 2025, and with just over a month and a half into his term, SSRS conducted a satisfaction survey on behalf of CNN to gauge public opinion.

The survey was carried out prior to Trump's highly publicized dispute with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meaning it does not account for any potential shifts in public opinion resulting from that conflict. Respondents were asked to evaluate the 78-year-old president’s performance across three key areas: job performance, prioritization of issues, and the direction of his policies.

The results revealed a predominantly negative outlook, with 52% of respondents expressing disapproval and 48% offering approval—a figure that has remained relatively stable since mid-February. Detailed breakdowns of the findings were also provided.

Trump continues to enjoy strong support from his Republican base, with 90% of Republican voters backing his leadership. However, an equal percentage of Democrats (90%) view him as an ineffective leader. Among independent voters, 59% disapprove of his actions, while 41% support him—a slight decline of two percentage points from previous surveys.

CNN highlighted that during Trump’s first term, none of his speeches before Congress had a measurable impact on polling numbers beyond the margin of error, which stands at 3%. This time, however, the situation may differ, as Trump has been actively working to deliver on his campaign promises at a rapid pace.

Despite this, a significant portion of the American public remains skeptical about the direction of his policies. Specifically, 45% of respondents believe the country is headed in the wrong direction under his leadership, compared to 39% who feel positively about the trajectory. The remaining respondents expressed no clear opinion.

The survey also explored gender-based differences in support for Trump. While 54% of men approve of his presidency, 57% of women disapprove of his policies. These figures have remained consistent over time. Although Trump’s recent dispute with Zelensky and the breakdown of agreements related to the war in Ukraine could potentially influence public opinion, domestic issues and immediate concerns remain the primary focus for most Americans.

In summary, the poll reveals a deeply divided electorate, with Trump maintaining strong support among Republicans but facing significant opposition from Democrats and independents. While his efforts to fulfill campaign promises may resonate with some, a substantial portion of the population remains unconvinced about the direction of his policies. As his presidency progresses, domestic issues are likely to continue shaping public opinion more than international disputes.
